February News from Oakland High School
It's amazing that we are halfway through the school year.  We helped promote finals and celebrate with students by having the Student Council provide pancakes to those students who came in early to study Wednesday, and opening the Oaker Cafe  on Thursday morning.   We celebrated Student of the month by recognizing two students for the character trait of “New Year, New You”.  We were happy to recognize Nallely Montoya and Elijah Arrant, two Juniors that have truly grown into outstanding OHS Students.
Eight Band members represented OHS at Honors Band and played with all other top band students from Douglas County.   In addition, the outstanding pep band has been playing at all home games and helping fill the stands with spirit.
National FFA Week is this week, and we have celebrated with dress-up days, teacher appreciation breakfast, and an I-Believe Assembly.  In addition, they performed a community service activity Monday by volunteering hours at Saving Grace.

Winter athletes have been working hard, and the regular season has ended. Boys wrestling districts concluded with 2 students qualifying for State.  Girls Wrestling Districts was held Friday and Saturday February 16 & 17th. (I will update at the board meeting regarding state qualifiers.)  Girls basketball ended 2nd in the South Division, and hosted a league playoff game. The goal was to secure a spot in the League Tournament.  The Boys Basketball team won the South Division, and will be playing in the League Tournament.  (Updates will be provided at the board meeting, regarding the next steps of the  basketball State Playoffs.)

With the second semester starting, we continue to recognize positive improvement regarding attendance and grades.  We continue to advocate for student involvement, regular attendance and positive behavior.  Staff continues to work hard to engage students daily in the classroom and make learning relevant.  Seniors are being pushed to finish their senior projects, and finish strong in all their classes, as well as continue to be good leaders of our school. We will be celebrating them and recognizing their “next steps” as we head into the final months of their Oakland School Career.  We have scheduled May 16th as a Senior Project Presentation/Celebration day, and we will be looking for panelists willing to listen to Senior Projects.

This month I will continue to work with Seniors to make sure they are on track and moving forward with their next steps/plans.  The changes to the FAFSA have made things a little challenging this year, and I continue to work through this with Seniors and their parents.  We are continuing to implement our BASE (SEL Curriculum) and our CIS (Careers) through our Advisory program. Though this is a learning year for our teachers and students, students are progressing through the curriculum and finding value in the work.
