News from the Principal

Dear Oaker Parents & Students,
Wow!  The hallways at OHS are buzzing with energy as we roll into the last week of Quarter 1.  I thought I would reach out to share some celebrations with you.  The Fall Sports season is winding down.  Volleyball completed their season last week, finishing 2nd in the South division of our League.  Cross-Country competes at Districts today with hopes of sending members on to state. Football’s final league game is this Friday.  We will find out more about their State Playoff Game next week.  Join us Friday night at Eddy Field at 7 pm as we celebrate and  acknowledge our Senior Cheerleaders, Cross-Country Runners, and Football players at the home game.   Our amazing Band and Cheerleading squad continue to root on our teams from the sidelines and help support our fantastic student sections. We will celebrate our Fall Athletes at the Sports Recognition Night on Monday November 6th at 6:30.  On another note, FFA is sending five members to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis next week.  The Nursery Team will represent the State of Oregon and are competing to bring home the Gold. Meanwhile, FFA has been busy collecting canned food from around the community during the month of October.  We have recognized two outstanding students in September and October, for the character traits of “excited” and “hardworking”.
Not only have our students been excelling outside of the classroom, we have begun an Advisory program at OHS.  Your student has been assigned to a grade-level Advisor who will serve in this capacity with them through their high school experience.  We will meet with Advisor Groups every 3-4 weeks with the intention of Career & College/postsecondary planning, as well as financial literacy education. We are excited about this opportunity to continue strengthening our relationships and providing opportunities for our students.
Finally, I did want to remind you that the first Quarter ends next Friday, November 3rd.  Remember, you have the ability to check your student’s grades on Alma.  Please encourage them to talk to their teachers and do what they can to improve their grades this final week.  This is another reminder that our Parent-Teacher Conferences will be November 15th and 16th from 5-8 pm.  If you would like to schedule to meet with teachers at Conference, or if you need support logging into Alma, please call Katie Baxter at the OHS front office, 541-459-2597.  I invite you to join us at Conferences to meet the teachers and help celebrate the amazing things that are happening in and out of our classrooms.  Oakland High School continues to strive for excellence with each and every student and we invite you to celebrate with us.

Sincerely,
Rachel Swearingen
